Nails are the most miscalculated item on a Seoul itinerary. People treat it as a stop between cafés, book 7 PM, and discover that a set with art takes two and a half hours — by which point the place holding their suitcase is closing.
This is a guide to the process, not a shop list. How the menu is built, why quoted totals move, how many hours you actually need free, and how to count those hours backwards from your luggage pickup deadline.
Why can Google Maps not find Hongdae nail salons?
Because Google does not hold full Korean map data — use Naver Map or Kakao Map instead.
Google Maps is close to unusable for walking directions and small businesses in Korea. Export restrictions on mapping data mean Google does not hold full Korean map data, so walking routes are missing or wrong and most small shops either do not appear or appear with stale information.
Use Naver Map (네이버 지도) or Kakao Map (카카오맵) instead. Both have English interfaces. Practical consequences:
- Search the salon in Korean characters, not romanised. Copy-pasting
헤이오브제works; typing “Hey Objet” often does not. - Naver Map is also where the booking button lives for salons that use Naver Booking.
- Korean addresses are
road name + number(e.g. Wausan-ro 29ba-gil 10). The-gilpart is the small alley. Enter the whole thing. - Exit numbers matter more than street names. Hongik Univ. Station has exits that are a genuine ten-minute walk apart, so getting the exit wrong turns a three-minute walk into fifteen. → Hongik Univ. Station Exit Guide
Why get your nails done in Korea?
The combination of design level and price. Korean salons spend 15 to 20 minutes on prep alone — filing, buffing, cuticle work, dehydrator or primer — before any colour goes on. That prep is why the gel resists lifting; published guidance and customer reports commonly describe 2 to 4 weeks of wear.
On design, the 2026 vocabulary is syrup nails (that translucent jelly finish), mirror chrome and glass nails, soft wave raised-gel lines, and ink blending. Treating each nail as a separate small canvas, so that ten different designs form one set, is standard rather than exotic.
On price, Hongdae and the university districts are noticeably cheaper than Apgujeong or Cheongdam. Travel guides consistently report that comparable art costs considerably more in major US or Japanese cities. But “Korea is cheap” is only half true — once charms and extensions are added, the total climbs fast, which is the next section.
Reading the menu — the price table
The thing visitors do not expect: art is priced per nail, on top of a base price. That is why a shop advertising a 50,000 won gel set quotes you 90,000 won. It is not a tourist markup. It is the charm count.
Ranges below are publicly listed prices as of September 2026. Salon tier and design complexity push beyond them.
| Service | Korean on the menu | Listed range (KRW) |
|---|---|---|
| Basic care | 케어 · 기본 네일 | 18,000 – 40,000 |
| One-colour gel | 원컬러 · 단색젤 · 풀컬러 | 35,000 – 60,000 |
| French | 프렌치 | 60,000 – 80,000 |
| Gradation | 그라데이션 | 60,000 – 80,000 |
| Full art (all ten nails) | 아트 | from 60,000 |
| Charms and stones | 파츠 · 스톤 | 2,000 – 3,000 each |
| Extensions (tip / gel / acrylic) | 연장 · 팁연장 · 젤연장 | 80,000 – 140,000 |
| Pedicure care | 페디 케어 | 30,000 – 50,000 |
| Pedicure one colour | 페디 풀컬러 | 59,000 – 70,000 |
| Removal — their own work | 자샵 제거 | 0 – 10,000 |
| Removal — another shop’s work | 타샵 제거 | 10,000 – 20,000 (25,000 – 30,000 with extensions or heavy charms) |
Three things to hold on to:
- Art is per-nail. Stones and pearls at 2,000 to 3,000 won each. Charms across ten fingers adds 20,000 to 30,000 won to the base.
- Removal is separate, and another shop’s gel costs more to remove. That logic applies at home too. If you get extensions at the end of your trip, the removal appointment back home is part of the real price.
- Extensions split three ways. Tip extension, gel extension, acrylic. Acrylic is the hardest and the smelliest; gel is easier to apply but relatively weaker. All three cost and take substantially more than an overlay on your natural nail.
Prices are fixed and displayed. There is no tipping in Korea — the number you are quoted is the number you pay.
How long does a gel manicure take in Korea?
A simple single-colour set is roughly an hour. Full art or extensions runs 2 to 3 hours or more. The consistent published figure for a Korean nail appointment is “1.5 to 2 hours or more,” with removal adding 20 to 30 minutes on top.
In other words, nails are not something you drop into a gap. They occupy half a day. If you are also planning hair or skin on the same trip, sequence them together → How to plan a Hongdae beauty day
| What you are getting | Hours to keep free |
|---|---|
| Removal only | 20 – 30 min |
| Care only | 30 – 40 min |
| One-colour gel | about 1 hour |
| French or gradation | 1 – 1.5 hours |
| Full art, all ten nails | 1.5 – 2.5 hours |
| Extensions plus art | 2.5 – 3.5 hours |
| Hands and feet together | add about 1 hour |
| Removing existing gel first | add 20 – 30 min |
Planning estimates that include consultation and normal overrun. Actual time depends on design complexity and the state of your nails.
One more trap: closing time and last-appointment time are different numbers. A salon listed as open until 9 PM may stop taking new appointments at 7 PM, because the artist needs two hours to finish you. If you want art, evening slots are scarcer than the opening hours suggest.
How do you book a Hongdae nail salon without Korean?
KakaoTalk channel or Instagram DM in practice; a travel platform if you want no Korean at all. Naver Booking is the default channel that locals use, but it is largely Korean-only.
Naver Booking (네이버 예약) is the default channel, and it is largely Korean-only. It wants a Naver account, and cancellation cut-offs are enforced by the system rather than by the shop. For a visitor, this is the real barrier — not the language spoken inside the salon.
Four realistic routes:
| Route | How | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Naver Booking | Find the shop in Naver Map, hit the reservation button. Korean-first | If you can read Korean or will use a translation app. Some shops give a first-visit discount only through this channel |
| KakaoTalk channel | Add the shop’s Kakao channel, message them. Effectively booking by chat | Fast answers, and same-day enquiries |
| Instagram DM | Most salons run Instagram as portfolio and booking desk at once | Sending reference photos directly into the conversation |
| Travel booking platforms | Creatrip, Trazy, KKday, Klook and similar | No Korean at all. Price is fixed in advance and confirmation arrives in your language |
Send all of it in one message. Name, preferred date and time, hands or feet, 2 to 3 reference photos, whether you have existing gel that needs removing, and your preferred length. Those six items cut the back-and-forth in half.
Customs worth knowing before you message
- Walk-ins are possible but unreliable. Larger shops with several stylists sometimes open same-day slots; a large share of Hongdae salons do not. Published guidance recommends 3 to 4 days ahead, and 1 to 2 weeks for popular artists.
- Many shops are 1인샵 — single-artist studios. One person, one client at a time, appointment only. Walk-ins are structurally impossible. If you want to sit with a friend, pick a shop with multiple stylists.
- Deposits and no-show policies exist. Not everywhere, but Naver Booking enforces cancellation windows and some shops take a deposit. If you cannot make it, message them.
- Payment leans cash and Korean mobile payment. Some small shops add a surcharge for card. Foreign cards are hit and miss. Carry some cash. → Paying for things in Korea

Confirmed salons in and around Hongdae, Yeonnam and Sangsu
The shops below spread across three neighbourhoods that are walkable from each other — Yeonnam-dong to the north, Sangsu and Danginri to the south. Only salons cross-checked across more than one independent source are listed. Anything that could not be confirmed was left out. No phone numbers or exact hours here — those change often. Check Naver Map or the shop’s own Instagram before you go.
Hey Objet 헤이오브제 — Eoulmadang-ro, Hongdae
One of the few salons that publishes a full price list on its own site: nail care in the 30,000–40,000 band, full colour 49,000–60,000, French and gradation 69,000–79,000, art from 60,000. Pedicure care 40,000–50,000, pedicure full colour 59,000–70,000. Removal 0–20,000.
Support in English, Japanese and Chinese is advertised. Bookable through Naver Booking, Instagram DM, and travel platforms including Trazy, KKday and WAUG. A first-visit discount via Naver Booking has been advertised (removal excluded). Roughly 8 to 10 minutes’ walk from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 9, in the Eoulmadang-ro area.
OU Nail 오유네일 — Wausan-ro 29ba-gil
A long-standing choice for international customers, with English-speaking staff confirmed across several sources. Known for extensions and for gradation, magnetic and French work. Publicly listed prices start around 30,000 won for a basic manicure, about 45,000 for a gel manicure, around 30,000 for a basic pedicure, and up to roughly 140,000 won for extensions with gel. Booking is by KakaoTalk or phone, and the shop explicitly asks for 3 to 4 days’ notice. Listed as closed Mondays. About 3 minutes from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 7.
EYEOEYE Nail & Lash 아이오아이 — Wausan-ro 27-gil
One of the larger salons in Hongdae, with several stylists — so two friends can be worked on at the same time, which most Hongdae shops cannot manage. English, Chinese and Japanese support is advertised. Extensions, custom designs, and lash perms. Notably, same-day bookings via KakaoTalk or Naver are sometimes available — rare in this area. About 3 minutes from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 9, second floor.
Nail Kimlee 네일킴리 — Jandari-ro, between Hongdae and Hapjeong
Near Sangsangmadang, on the stretch between the two neighbourhoods. Known for one-to-one consultation and detailed custom work; also does lash perms. Basic English and fluent Chinese support is advertised. Book through Instagram or travel platforms (Trazy, KKday). Listed as closed Tuesdays. Walkable from Hapjeong Station, and from Hongik Univ. Station.
Noir Nail Studio 누아르네일스튜디오 — Yanghwa-ro 23-gil
A private boutique — few clients at a time, appointment essential. Range runs from simple full-colour to detailed art, with hygiene as the stated selling point. On the Hongdae–Yeonnam boundary. Booking via Instagram.
Nail Indigo 네일인디고 — Hongdae
Listed as English-friendly. The draw is a wall of 30-plus monthly-refreshed sample designs, so you can choose on the spot without reference photos. Gel manicures have been listed from around 35,000 won, with hard gel around 45,000. Worth knowing: a card surcharge has been reported, so bring cash. Booking by KakaoTalk or Instagram DM.
Bijou Nail 비쥬네일 — alley off Hongik Univ. Station Exit 7
A neighbourhood shop with a reputation for wear longevity. Extensions and art are the focus. Booking through its KakaoTalk channel or by phone; the shop asks that same-day and complex-design requests come by phone. Also listed on Korean online booking platforms. In the alley running in from Exit 7.
here:re 히어리네일 — Mangwon-dong
At the western end of the Hongdae strip. A small studio known for omakase nails and 3D art — a different design on each finger, built around you rather than a catalogue. Important for planning: the listed last appointment is 7 PM, and it is closed Sundays. If you were hoping for an evening art session, the arithmetic here does not work.
What was left out: shops that could not be confirmed beyond their own Instagram, and anything where current operating status was ambiguous. Hongdae has many more nail salons than this, and small studios turn over quickly.
Where does your suitcase go during a nail appointment?
Not in the salon — store it at the station first, then count backwards from the pickup deadline.
You cannot sit through a two-and-a-half-hour appointment holding a suitcase. Hongdae nail salons are small rooms — up two flights of stairs, three or four chairs, one aisle. There is no floor space for a 28-inch case, and nobody will ask you to leave it in the corridor because there is no corridor.
The problem is not dropping the bag off. It is getting it back.
- Staffed counters (TLUGGAGE, Jimcarry): close 22:00
- Musinsa Standard lockers: close 20:30
- 24-hour self-service: Annyeong (Exit 7) · Cocoon (Exits 5 and 7) · Exit 7 lockers · LuggageQ · Welcome Center (Exit 5)
(checked on site 2026-06-29)
Now run the arithmetic backwards.
| Appointment | Service | Out at | Staffed counter, 22:00 | Musinsa locker, 20:30 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14:00 | Art, 2.5 h | 16:30 | Fine | Fine |
| 17:00 | Extensions, 3 h | 20:00 | Fine | Tight |
| 18:00 | Art, 2.5 h | 20:30 | Fine | Gone |
| 19:00 | One colour, 1 h | 20:00 | Fine | Tight |
| 19:00 | Art, 2.5 h | 21:30 | 30 minutes of margin | Gone |
| 20:00 | Art, 2.5 h | 22:30 | Gone | Gone |
Look at the 7 PM row. Art at 7 PM puts you back on the street at 9:30 PM with thirty minutes to reach a staffed counter. Nail appointments running thirty minutes over is ordinary — the consultation runs long, you change the design halfway, the client before you was late. Lose that half hour and your suitcase is locked up until the counter reopens in the morning.
On a checkout day, or for any evening appointment, use a 24-hour self-service option. Staffed counters are the better choice for oversized or awkward items and when you want a person to deal with, but they have a closing time and your nail appointment does not respect it. → Staffed luggage storage in Hongdae, compared · Early morning and late night luggage
Practical warnings
- Check the result before you leave the chair. Colour tweaks and small corrections are easy on the spot and close to impossible once you have walked out. Photograph them there too.
- Gel is cured under a lamp, so it is hard when you stand up. No drying time. But freshly extended nails snag and lever off easily for the first day, and the single worst thing for them is wrestling a suitcase. Another reason the bag should already be stored.
- Flying. Gel, extensions and press-on tips are not a problem for a flight. If you buy nail tools to take home, sharp implements like cuticle nippers and scissors can be restricted in cabin baggage — check your airline’s rules and put them in checked luggage.
- Budget for removal. If you get extensions near the end of the trip, a salon at home will charge you its own version of the “another shop’s work” removal fee. That is part of the real cost.
- Hands and feet together must be requested when booking. It changes the staffing and the time block.
Bottom line
- Art is charged per nail on top of a base price. That single fact explains every quote that moved.
- One hour for a single colour, 2 to 3 hours for art or extensions. Treat nails as a half-day plan.
- Naver Booking is the default, KakaoTalk is the practical route, travel platforms are the safety net. Always send 2 to 3 reference photos.
- Store your bag first, and count backwards from the pickup deadline, not from the appointment time.
