Store It, Ship It, or Drag It
Checkout at 11 AM, flight at night. You have 6 to 8 hours and three choices for your bags.
Spoiler: With one or two bags, storage is almost always cheapest. With three or more and a long move, shipping buys you time. Dragging it around looks free — until you add up the taxis.
Three options, side by side
| Store | Ship to airport | Haul it | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost per bag | ₩2,200–6,000 | ₩17,000–45,000 | ₩0 (on paper) |
| Time constraints | Storage hours | Drop-off cutoff + airport counter closes 08:00–22:00 | None |
| Where you see your bag again | Where you left it | Airport pickup counter | On you, always |
| Best for | Hanging out in Hongdae, then heading to the airport | 3+ bags, hotel → airport direct | One or two short moves, brief wait |
| Fatal flaw | You have to go back for it | Expensive, tight time windows | It wrecks your entire route |

Total cost by scenario
Assumption: Hongdae accommodation, checkout 11 AM, evening flight, Incheon Airport T1. About 6 hours of free time.
Scenario A. Solo traveler, 1 suitcase
| Method | Math | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Store | Large locker: ₩4,400 / 4 hrs + ₩2,000 extra 2 hrs + AREX All-stop | ~₩6,400 + transit |
| Ship | ₩25,000 × 1 + your own AREX fare | ~₩25,000 + transit |
| Haul | Café/restaurant constraints → take 2 taxis instead | ~₩20,000–30,000 |
→ Storage wins by a mile. One-quarter the cost of shipping.
Scenario B. Couple, 2 suitcases + backpacks
| Method | Math | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Store (staffed) | Medium: ₩8,000 × 2 / 4 hrs + 2 extra hrs | ~₩20,000 |
| Store (1 large locker) | Two 24″ bags squeezed into one locker — tight fit | ₩6,400 |
| Ship | ₩25,000 × 2 | ₩50,000 |
→ Still storage. Two bags in one large locker is iffy, so a staffed counter is the realistic call.
Scenario C. Family of 4, 3 suitcases + stroller
| Method | Math | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Store (staffed) | Large day rate: ₩20,000 × 3 + stroller separate | ₩60,000+ |
| Ship | ₩25,000 × 3 = ₩75,000 (stroller: ask separately) | ₩75,000 |
| Haul | Subway is near-impossible → van taxi round-trip | ₩60,000+ |
→ This is where it splits. On price alone, storage edges it out. But walking back for three suitcases and a stroller may not be worth the ₩15,000 saved. Here, shipping buys sanity.
Scenario D. Group with 3+ bags, planning to stay in Hongdae all day
→ Store. Shipping assumes a hotel-to-airport direct route. If you plan to hang out in Hongdae first, shipping does not fit the schedule.
The break-even rule (three sentences)
- Two bags or fewer, under a day → store. Almost no exceptions.
- Three or more bags, hotel straight to airport → consider shipping. But only if your flight leaves before the airport counter closes (usually 10 PM).
- If you plan to spend more time in Seoul or Hongdae → store, always. Shipping sends you and your bags to the airport separately; it clashes with any in-between plans.
What people miss about shipping
- The drop-off cutoff is not the real deadline. Hotel pickup → sorting → airport transit takes time. For an evening flight, drop-off often needs to happen before noon.
- Your accommodation has to accept it. Guesthouses and Airbnbs without a front desk will often refuse.
- You still have to pick it up at the airport. It’s not checked baggage — you collect it at a counter, then haul it to check-in yourself.
- Wrong terminal and you’re done. Write T1 when you meant T2 and it’s a 20-minute shuttle ride to fix it.
What people miss about storing
- Pickup closing time. Lockers are 24 hours; staffed counters are not. If you have an evening flight, make sure the counter closes after you plan to pick up.
- The round-trip to get your bag. Store in Hongdae, spend the day in Gangnam, and you lose an hour just retrieving it. On your last day, store on your departure route. Hongik Univ. Station sits on the AREX line — this is why it works.
- Lockers might be full. Weekend afternoons, do not count on finding a free large locker. A staffed counter with reservations is safer.
Quick-reference decision table
| Bags | Time | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Under 6 hrs | Locker |
| 1–2 | Full day or more | Staffed counter (day rate) |
| 3+ | Staying in Hongdae | Staffed counter |
| 3+ | Heading straight to airport | Consider shipping |
| Oversized or odd-shaped | Any | Staffed counter (message ahead) |
